Prowein fairs, an important German event, where Abruzzo participated along with its 30 wine companies, have already finished. This kind of event certainly couldn’t miss a region of such a great importance like ours, given the fact that Germany is the largest exporter of Abruzzo wine (with an estimated value ofabout 22 million euros).
We have just came back, and now it’s time to go to Verona, where on Monday, March 23nd will take place the 49th edition of Vinitaly, an event in which the Abruzzo region will participate along with about 90 wineries, some of which are just individual producers, other belong to Preservation Consortium of Abruzzo Wines, there’re also those from the hills of Teramo [Consorzi di Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo e Colline Teramane] located mainly in the pavilion 12.
One of the main participants of the fairs in Verona will undoubtedly be Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, one of the most popular and best-selling wines in large wine networks (7,000,000 and 463,000 liters sold in Italy in 2014). According to the classification developed by the research institute IRI for Vinitaly, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano and Pecorino are the most sought-after wines of the region of Abruzzo and Molise.
But what causes that we love the wine that Dino Pepe, Assessor for Agricultural Policy, described as our “ambassador of Abruzzo in the world”?
Maybe it’s about a bouquet; aromas of cherries, ripe, red fruits, blackberries and spices mixed with a hint of licorice root. And those possible shades of vanilla, dried and smoked plums, as well as aging in barrels.
Certainly the flavors: in the mouth it is juicy, warm, with a gentleness that gives pleasure and well-integrated, vibrating tannins.
Certainly food, to which the wine fits perfectly, creating an unforgettable “enogastromici” experience. Meals are prepared according to traditional cuisine of Abruzzo, in particular in terms of roasted and grilled meats.
And I beg you, do not confuse it with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, produced in Tuscany, from Sangiovese graft!
