They’re more than two hundred scattered all over Italy and they recently joined in an association. The so called Painted Villages are a real open air museum! What are they? Usually small villages characterized by paintings and murals on the walls outside the houses; sometimes for decoration, sometimes in honour of the traditions.
Azzinano di Tossicia and Casoli di Atri are two villages to represent Abruzzo in the Painted Villages association. The fantasy of these places stands out undisputed along narrow streets and alleys. For this reason, these works of art that can be visited everyday from everybody. The revaluation of these villages, graced with paintings and murals, is continuous.
Azzinano wants to promote its historical memory and ancient traditions with a special theme dedicated to the games of the past. As a result, a new summer event was born, called “I muri raccontano” (walls tell). Many artists from all over the country participate in painting the walls of the village with their ideas.
Instead, in Casoli, a biennal contest called “Casoli Pinta” takes place, where a jury picks the best murals which will decorate the village.
Both towns are easily reachable from our camping. Azzinano is about an hour drive away and Casoli only 10 km.
